Western Plains Zoo - Dubbo

Doesn't every child love the zoo? Apparently not.
We'd been planning to visit Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo for years, and finally we made it these last holidays. The only other time we'd been there was BC (Before Children) and we remembered it fondly as a day spent riding bikes around a big open zoo, looking at exotic wild animals.
Maybe our kids are not that into animals or the wrong age, but right from the start, the day was... average.
For a start, we saw the sun so assumed it would be warm. In fact, it was chilly in early October and the shorts and t-shirts the kids dressed themselves in, were totally inadequate.
We drove in, paid our $98 for a family ticket, and decided to do a lap in the campervan (yes, 4 berth with shower and toilet!) before we hired bikes. Just as well. Their eyes glazed over almost straight away.
"Look at the giraffes! Let's get out and see them up close!"
"We can see them from here," they said, still glued to their seats.
The range of animals was so fantastic from rhinos to elephants to huge hippos. My husband and I were fascinated, but the kids only mildly interested.
The highlight of their day was sitting on our laps, helping to drive the van around the park. Needless to saw we didn't bother with the bikes.
Stupidly, we saved the best for last. The Galapagos Tortoises - huge prehistoric-looking tortoises that you can touch, were mesmerising for all of us.
The monkeys and gibbons were also good fun. They put on quite a show for us, swinging about, eating apples with their feet.
If there's ever a next time, it's straight to the tortoises and monkeys for us.
