Cricket - Howzat?
January 8th 2010 05:56
What kind of game goes for five days and often concludes in a draw? It's cricket of course, a source of great passion among Commonwealth nations but a bizarre and often boring marathon to the rest of the world.
Hordes of sports fans like the English "Barmy Army" travel the world, following their teams to the ends of the earth. Why?
The Sydney Test match between Australia and Pakistan this week shows why sport captures the imagination. Truly, the game had more twists and turns than a James Patterson thriller.
I went to Day 3 of the match with my 8-year-old cricket-mad son. In an age of the DS and Wii, it's comforting to know that watching an actual game of sport is still fun for a kid. Even better, getting out in the Milo cricket nets before the game and at lunch and bowling a few balls himself.
The result - well we had to go home and wait another day to find out. (Australia won by 36 runs.) But if you're looking for a reason to travel and something to keep the kids interested, consider a sporting event. There's no better way to experience another culture than amongst thousands of screaming locals. Howzat? It's gold.
